One person is being assassinated in Basra every hour, as order in Iraq's second city disintegrates, according to an Iraqi Defence Ministry official.

The number of violent killings in Basra is now at a level close to that of Baghdad, and marks the failure of the British Army's three-year attempt to quell violence there. Police no longer dare go to the site of a murder because they fear being attacked....

Majid al-Sari, an adviser to the Iraqi Ministry of Defence, describing the situation in Basra to the daily al-Zaman, said that on average one person was being assassinated every hour....

The Great Crusade Against Brown People strides on with all the grace of a two week old animated corpse and even the True Believers are catching that most deadly of viral strains, the infamous "Bush Hatred". We all knew it was only a matter of time before it jumped party lines, spreading like wildfire, though this particular strain seems to have mutated into two virulent forms "Ferrerner Hate" and a Fundie variety "Bush-is-our-bitch-and-he'd-better-start-fluffing-us-like-a-porn-star".

And Lance Mannion sees a correlation that hadn't occurred to me before:

"No, because 'real conservatism hasn't been tried'. So the fact that it's been a hideous miserable failure has nothing to do with conservatives and you should all vote for the Real Conservatives this fall!"

That sounds *so* much like my Communist friends. (: The reason Communism has failed so far has nothing to do with the conflicts with basic human nature and rest entirely in the fact that we haven't had *real* Communism yet.
