Me and my laptop last night:

L: *starts to boot* Oooh, I detect new hardware!

Me: *blinks* Wha-?

L: I'll just see if I can locate the drivers.

Me: *holds laptop up, looks around* Um, there's no new hardware.

L: Yes there is.

Me: No, there really isn't.

L: You just don't see it, but I know it's there.

Me: Right.

L: Oh dear...

Me: ?!

L: I, uh, seem to have done something to the registry. Something bad.

Me: ?!!!

L: You'd better reboot in Safe Mode.

Me: *alarmed* Ok, ok, Safe Mode, troubleshooter, right, got it.

L: I know, why don't you restore the registry? It's easy and it'll fix everything right up.

Me: Uh, ok, I'll just click on "Restore Registry" and...

L: Oh, no, sorry, you can't do that.

Me: But you just said...

L: Yes, well that was before you tried it, I was reasonably sure it would work, but now, obviously, it won't.

Me: Reasonably? But...

L: Why don't you just find yourself a nice DOS prompt and type in "scanreg/fix", that'll take care of it.

Me: Are you sure?

L: Oh absolutely.

Me: All right, then, I'll just reboot and...wait, why are you suddenly acting like nothing's wrong?

L: Huh?

Me: You just booted properly without me having to do anything else, I thought I had to fix the registry.

L: What are you talking about? Nothing to see here. La, la, la....

Me: *fumes*

I'm sorry, love, but I can't resist the classic response to a story like this:

Get a Mac. /B-}

Okay, I'm done now. I'm sorry to hear your computer is having a case of Random Flake-outs - I hope it goes away soon.

The funniest thing was that yesterday at work I got a spiffing new system that now works like a dream. I get home, and my own system goes :P~~~

D00dette, you need to leave Windows behind... Or at least go to WinXP where the registry is less evil.

I promise I'm considering a Mac, I just don't have the money right now to leave Windows behind. Maybe after all my trips this summer...

I have a 17" powerbook...

Have I mentioned lately that you are totally, completely, and utterly mad? BTW, do you want paperbacks only for your trip, and would you prefer fiction or non-fiction? I'm trying to make some reasonable educated guesses on what to bring along with me next weekend.

Mad, yes... but a good friend to have... 17" powerbook for low low price so I can get new shiny...

..paperback only, anything good, prefer fiction usually.

What frightens me is the thought of what you'll replace the Powerbook with. Although I must say my boss got the cutest laptop, 3.5 pounds, and absolutely adorable. He's taking it with him to Hungary.

You are quickly becoming the gadget geek poster boy, you know that, right? Ok, so now I'm curious, what are you upgrading to, you madman?

Of course you realize, given the current naming convention, I'd almost be required to call mine Ron, right?

Although I will name it "Ronnie the Bear", and after you listen to "Wizard People, Dear Reader" you'll understand why.

If I owned a copy of SS, I would love to listen to it, but alas, I do not.

I do like how you're already talking about this like it's a forgone conclusion, though.

Too late. Once you get used to a Mac, an iPod is the next logical step.

Repeat after me: "Apple makes the best toys. Apple makes the best toys. Apple makes ..." /B->
