I've actually found that the complete opposite is true: liberal arts majors (which include, yes, artists, musicians, and writers) tend to be much, much more widely read and much more knowledgeable about history, politics, economics, and so on than the average business or engineering student.

And Helprin is such a doctrinaire right winger that I find it impossible to read his books. And I read (and by and large enjoy) military SF by conservative/libertarian writers like Larry Niven, David Weber, and Robert Heinlein.
