So, [livejournal.com profile] anniesj, vile temptress that she is, informs us today that there is yet another David Thewlis picture that I MUST SEE:

...

It took me about ten minutes to realize that I was way in over my head with this one. This movie was going to kill me. It was so lush, so ripe, so rich and beautiful and just ... GYAH. It's the story of an African woman (Thandie Newton) whose husband has been thrown into prison, so she goes to Rome and cleans the house of this reclusive composer (Teh Thewlis WTF) who plays piano all day and is terribly in love with her. And it is SO GOOD. SOOOO GOOOOOOD. The movie will break your heart, and Thewlis? Oh, he'll just break you.

I am broken here, people. BROKEN. Jason Kinsky is my new god, and David Thewlis AS Jason Kinsky is like ... dude, that's my Remus. Right there, that is him. BAM. It's like ... there are no words. I'm still all incoherent with love. He plays piano. There's a ridiculous number of close-ups on his hands. HIS HANDS PEOPLE WTF. This movie is very quiet, very intense, and very big on details. Small details, the kinds of things people in love notice. And ohhhhh man, I noticed. There's this one shot of Thewlis sprawled out on a sofa, listening to music in his socks, and this one brief close-up of the small strip of skin between his sock and his trouser cuff, hairs all gold in the Roman sun ... UMMMMMMM GUUUUUUUUH HOLY SHIT. *is reduced to spasms*

And the NEED, people. THE NEED. There's this one scene early on in the movie when Kinsky confesses his love, and it's the most raw, vulnerable, desperate thing I've ever seen. NNNGH. His hands reach for her, wanting to touch her, and then he withdraws because he knows it's wrong, but then he can't help himself and has to touch her, and I turned somersaults of twisty wibbling in my chair and whimpered like a kicked puppy.

But it just gets better (or worse, if you're me and already consider yourself too far gone over an obscure and unconventional British actor). Kinsky gives piano lessons (and one adorable concert) to the local children. He speaks ITALIAN. He fucking juggles, people, and he juggles REALLY WELL, and pulls adorable faces while doing so and takes bites of apples in between his juggling feats. Dude. David Thewlis JUGGLES. That's something I did not need to know, because that is something that is going to put me in an early grave. And the whole time, he pines, and he sacrifices, and he gives up everything for this woman (and holy shit is Thandie Newton ever gorgeous in this), and you just KNOW it won't end well and when it ends ...

*passes out*

'Cause, you know, I haven't already got more than enough to watch/read already. Fuck. Right, well I could resist "Divorcing Jack" (just) but I think "Besieged" needs to be mine. Oh yes, it does indeed...Ok, it's mine and I should have it tomorrow, but in my own defense I have been very, very good this month. Really. Very good. I can afford one little splurge, right? *sigh*

I figure this is my gift to me for the presentation I have to help out on today and the two big projects that are going to eat my life for the next few weeks.

And it's not helping that insomnia seems to have moved in with me and is being a right bitch of a roommate. Doesn't even go halves on the rent. If my neck and shoulders get any more tense all the ibuprofen in the world won't help. Fortunately I've got a little rechargeable massager for just such occasions and it's currently sucking up the juice at home so it'll be nice and ready for me this evening.

Agenda for tonight, run errands, clean litterboxes, clean bathroom, vacuum carpets, clean out car (if there's time), another load of laundry with any luck, and then if I work myself hard enough, I'm hoping to actually pass out. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Um, yeah, that sounds much too good to pass up. Hmm, I'd be interested to see it myself. As if we don't have enough movies you want to show me. *grins*

I hope you get to pass out tonight. Miss Maggie was mewing and looking for her sister most of the night after spending most of the early evening hiding under the bed, so I am both exhausted and broken-hearted today. :(

I'm actually thinking that given your emotional state at present "Truly, Madly, Deeply" might not be the best choice for viewing this weekend. It's, um, a box o' hankies kind of film.

Well, that's not altogether a bad thing, but I will gladly sit down and watch whatever you choose to show me. :)

I can't resist commenting on Besieged. You won't regret it-- never mind the splurge, it's even worth going into hock for ;-) David Thewlis is incredible in it-- the subtle way he uses his body to express mood and emotion in the absence of dialogue just blew me away. The craftsmanship of the whole film is amazing.

And the music!

It's my favorite Thewlis movie ever.

Ok you just made me very glad that I went with expedited shipping and will be receiving this baby tomorrow. Though 24 hours is now seeming like an awfully long time to wait for it *sigh*
