Hardly, I think too many bad movies get away with "good special effects".

You should, 'tis very very good and she utterly captured the characters and came up with an entertaining and believeable plot. Well worth the read.

So, very poorly remembering the original, and not having yet been subjected to the prequel, is this a sequel to the prequel and sort of inbetween, or a sequel to the original thus completing the trifecta of 'guy with funny eyes and tank top' stories?

Prequel? Unless you're counting Pitch Black as the prequel I'm confused. If they took place in order it would be Pitch Black, The Faithful, then Chronicles of Riddick. I'm just saying they could've done quite nicely without that last one.
