May. 13th, 2007 07:52 pmWell we got
moonlightnrain all moved into her super swank new apartment with only a few bruises, strained muscles and sore backs. Aelf and I were a moving machine and agreed that we should really start our own business. She heads up packing the truck up and I'm in charge of getting stuff off.
Friday night we treated ourselves to stupendous veggie Chinese food (I'm utterly addicted to this eggplant/golden mushroom Hong Kong style chow mein that is to die for!) while we watched SG-1 before passing out. Then up again bright and early Saturday, wrapping up the second part of the move in about an hour and a half. Then A-, R- and I went to this cool Japanese furniture consignment place nearby to look for a sofa. Didn't find just what R- was looking for so we'll check back. But they do sell futon mattresses and oh how I need a new one.
Anyway Saturday after all that I got some laundry done and then crashed. R- came over to veg and watch the wretched made for Scifi channel film of the week. Sunday morning I was up bright and early again to run some errands, drop some stuff off at Goodwill for R-, a book at the library for A- and then over to the nursery for a couple of planter boxes to help bar Pye's escape tunneling and I discovered they had Pennyroyal (which is both a variety of mint and a great anti-bug/flea plant) so I was doomed, of course. Zoomed back in time to meet E- and P- for veggie dim sum with R- and A-. OMG so good. We ate sooooo much, but you have no idea how lovely it is to be able to go to a dim sum place and just eat whatever you want. The faux pork buns were amazing and I have declared that we're totally getting those from now on whenever we watch HK films.
The rest of the afternoon was pretty quiet until I got back from the grocery store and let Pye out on the patio. R- called and I was chatting with her as Pye very proudly brought his first prey item into the apartment. He dropped the little bird in the middle of the living room floor and looked up at me as if to say, "Ha! Got one of the little bastards!" I had a cloth shopping bag in my hand so I scooped up what I presumed was a dead little finch and carried it outside shutting the cats in behind me. As I put it down on the ground it started fluttering around. I must've sounded like a bit of a nut to R- as I announced first an ex-bird and then a very much alive one. I sat next to it until it managed to fly up to the fence where it sat staring at me for a long time. I just couldn't bring myself to leave it until I was sure it was ok, and when it flew away I breathed a deep sigh of relief and went in to reassure the cats they hadn't done anything wrong, which they didn't. Hunting is a part of what they are, it's what they do and you can't own cats if you don't understand they're predators. I was actually quite delighted that Pye brought me his prey rather than skulking off with it. He's come an awfully long way since his almost feral days.
And speaking of the kitties, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit I just splurged and bought them this. Yeah it's a bit excessive, but they've needed a new kitty condo for ages, and Pye is going to just adore it. I mean the top level's called the "crow's nest", how could I resist that?
