I give up

Seriously, if anyone can explain to me our president can say this:

"This bill would support the taking of innocent human life in the hope of finding medical benefits for others. It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect, so I vetoed it."

And at the same time utterly ignore this:

The Iraqi government says it is worried about increasing sectarian violence in the country, following statistics released by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) stating that nearly 6,000 civilians were killed in May and June alone.

[...]

"A total of 5,818 civilians were reportedly killed and at least 5,762 wounded during May and June 2006," the report stated. "Killings, kidnappings and torture remain widespread. Fear resulting from these and other crimes continued to increase internal displacement and outflows of Iraqis to neighbouring countries."

In the first six months of the year, 14,338 people were killed, the report added. The statistics were compiled with help from the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health says that more than 50,000 people have been killed "in a brutal way" since April 2003. "All these bodies were unrecognisable and suffered serious torture," says Safa'a Yehia, senior official in the Ministry of Heath. "What is more shocking is that this included women and children. We have reached a serious deterioration in conditions and instead of an improvement of this sectarian violence, the death toll is rising without control."

Because I just don't get it, I really just don't get it. A frozen zygote must be protected at all costs, but women and kids can get tortured to death and that's just peachy? How to people who support Bush live with themselves? Have they no conscience or moral compass whatsoever? Surely they can't all be sociopaths so what gives?

And speaking of Iraq:

Iraqi leaders have all but given up on holding the country together and, just two months after forming a national unity government, talk in private of "black days" of civil war ahead.

Signalling a dramatic abandonment of the U.S.-backed project for Iraq, there is even talk among them of pre-empting the worst bloodshed by agreeing to an east-west division of Baghdad into Shi'ite and Sunni Muslim zones, senior officials told Reuters.

Tens of thousands have already fled homes on either side.

"Iraq as a political project is finished," one senior government official said -- anonymously because the coalition under Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki remains committed in public to the U.S.-sponsored constitution that preserves Iraq's unity.

[...]

As sectarian violence has mounted to claim perhaps 100 lives a day and tens of thousands flee their homes, a senior official from the once dominant Sunni minority concurred: "Everyone knows the situation is very bad," he said. "I'm not optimistic."

And these incompetant, ignorant neo-con assholes want to attack Iran next...

One former senior administration official said Bush is only emboldened by the pressure from U.N. officials and European leaders to lead a call for a cease-fire. U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan demanded yesterday that the fighting in Lebanon stop.

"He thinks he is playing in a longer-term game than the tacticians," said the former official, who spoke anonymously so he could discuss his views candidly. "The tacticians would say: 'Get an immediate cease-fire. Deal first with the humanitarian factors.' The president would say: 'You have an opportunity to really grind down Hezbollah. Let's take it, even if there are other serious consequences that will have to be managed.' "

Having been proven completely wrong about Iraq where "freedom on the march" made a quick right onto "anarchy in the streets", George Bush now wants to swat a hornets nest just to see what happens. This reminds me of the old Steven Wright joke about picking up hitchikers and telling them, "Put on your seat belt. I want to try something. I saw it once in a cartoon, but I think I can do it."

It is truly stunning to survey how much damage this shallow stupid man has done to the world in six short years, and to realize that we will be picking up after his mess for generations to come while he and Laura go back to Crawford and drink their dullwitted selves into oblivion.

Why oh why did Turner Movie Classics pick last night to run most of my favorite Elizabeth Taylor flicks back to back? Are they trying to kill me? Do they want me to go entirely without sleep? I finally gave up around 9:30 and recorded the last half of Beau Brummel which I just had to finish this morning. So sad, but my god Stewart Granger was hot in that flick. I've never been much of a fashion slut, but I do get a bit drooly over his costumes in that one.

And thanks to TiVo I'm always watching obscene amounts of animated series. Avatar: the Last Airbender continues to impress me. What's not to like about a show with intense continuity, interesting characters, a cool pseudo-Asian setting and elemental magic? And now that they've introduced a subplot where Aang is crushing madly on Kitara I'm even more intrigued. Funny how the addition of something as simple as a little hint of romance can hook me.

Speaking of which, Inuyash just needs to get over his dead ex-girlfriend and shag Kagome. If this has happened in the Manga and anyone can tell me how it turned out I'd love to hear it. I suspect, though, that this series is entirely powered by romance angst and that I'm going to end up frustrated in the extreme.

Also Full Metal Alchemist continues to convince me that I eventually need to plunk down the cash and just buy the series. Although having sneaked a peek at the series end I was disappointed to see that it seems to head in the usual incoherent WTF? direction that most anime does. The kind of ending that makes Stephen King's seem genuinely well thought out by comparison. Poo.

Ah and [livejournal.com profile] divine_debris has just posted info on the new flick "The Prestige" which tells me I need to see this film as soon as it's released:

Has everyone seen this new trailer for The Prestige? The film is based on the stellar Christopher Priest novel of the same name. The film boasts a pretty nifty cast including: Hugh Jackman as Rupert Angier, Christian Bale as Alfred Borden, David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, Michael Caine as Cutter, Scarlett Johansson as Olivia and Andy Serkis as Alley.

You can't get much better than turn of the century rival magicians in London battling each other for trade secrets, right? Well add on top that Christopher Nolan of Memento and Batman Begins fame is the screenwriter and director. I'm just chuffed to learn that Bowie will be playing Tesla, who is based on the real-life Serbian-American inventor who discovered the rotating magnetic field. The minute I saw him from a far in the trailer I knew it was Bowie. Fantastic.

Oh yeah, I'm going to be all over that film, hell I'm drooling already. The question is, do I read the novel first or wait until after I see the film? Decisions, decisions.

Also, has anyone heard anything about the new SciFi series about a sorcerer? I think it's called "The Devlin Files", and the trailer looked both fun and cheesy so I'm not sure whether to be enthusiastic about it or not. I'm quite liking "Eureka" so far, even if the plot was ridiculously easy to see through and the characters were only an inch or so deep, still it's got potential. And I'm adoring the Mr. Smithers-type kid, hope he hangs around for a bit.

One more quick thing, just heard from [livejournal.com profile] moonlightnrain who seems to be having a glorious time down in SD. Can't wait to hear back about all the fun at Comic Con!

From yesterday's Jackson Clarion-Ledger:

...Activists from Operation Save America, formerly known as Operation Rescue, have been in Jackson since Saturday for eight days of protests against [Mississippi]'s only abortion clinic, the Jackson Women's Health Organization in the Fondren neighborhood.

During a demonstration at the Capitol on Tuesday, anti-abortion activists tore up pages from the Quran, the Muslim holy book, along with a gay pride flag and copies of six U.S. Supreme Court rulings related to religion in public schools, sodomy and abortion.

The group intended to burn the items at the Capitol but couldn't because it didn't have a permit, said Operation Save America volunteer Pat McEwen, a retired college professor from Palm Bay, Fla.

Instead, the activists burned the Quran and other items Tuesday evening in the parking lot outside Making Jesus Real Church in Pearl, McEwen said. Police confirmed the burning....

What is it with fundies and burning things? And what the hell do gay pride flags and the Quran have to do with abortions anyway?
