Jun. 27th, 2005 11:48 amOh my gods I was never so glad to see my apartment as I was when I dragged myself into it around 12:30 this morning. Can I just say how miserable a long road trip can be when one has either a stomach virus or mild case of food poisoning from start to finish? I realized that this entire weekend I'd managed to eat and keep down the equivalent of a full meal and a half. On the plus side it's one vacation where I really didn't have to worry about putting on any weight. That's pretty much the only bright side I can come up with.
Did get to meet
ravenmb's kitties, who were wonderful. Spent a nice night at her place, then ended up laying around all day Friday as I'd no energy to do anything else. We drove over to the hotel later on through only mildly hellish traffic, checked in, then managed a meal at IHOP as scrambled eggs and pancakes sounded edible to me. Yay food, boo horrible hotel beds :(
Saturday we were up and about and I felt almost human again. Had a good breakfast and a Jamba (hooray!) and then headed to the con. It was quite small, but the dealer's room was full of BSG and general Creation stuff, much of it on deep discount. I had a copy of the BSG series soundtrack about 20 seconds after entering the con and oh gods was it worth it. Getting to meet the composer (and get his autograph!) afterwards was a convention highlight for me. His girlfriend was impressed with our costumes and Bear himself lit up and exclaimed, "Our first costumes!" when we showed up for autographs. I told him how much I enjoyed the lyrics to his "Battlestar Operatica" track, and he seemed delighted that someone had actually read them. He told me he'd had to sneak the lyrics through, only telling the producers what the soprano was singing in Italian a good deal later on. One of the lines, and the one he wrote on the liner notes for my personalized autograph was "Your girlfriend is a toaster". I laughed and laughed.
Jamie Bamber is every bit as hot in person as on screen, and what an absolutely sweet guy. He was running around the stage answering questions and chatting away, then stopped midsentence, stared out at Aelf, Raven and I and grinned, "There are people here dressed as me! That is so cool!" We didn't have the heart to tell him we were actually dressed as Starbuck. Of course considering that we and one other guy were the only ones in costume probably gained us a bit more attention than we would've otherwise received. It was astonishing how many people thought the costumes were somehow complicated to make when they couldn't have been simpler. And oh gods if we'd had a nickle for every person who stopped us to ask about the dog tags...well, it would've easily paid for parking.
Anyway, Jamie a doll, and if he does another con I'd find it worthwhile to pay extra to get a photo op with him. Best line of his talk had to be when he was asked about an Apollo action figure. He mused aloud what his figure's power would be and then commented that Katie would undoubtedly say, "A removable stick up his bum". Oh, and
jakejr, Aelf asked him who the blonde chick at the funeral was that he was standing next to, it was Apollo's mom being played by an extra (hence the veil). We thought you'd be pleased :)
The music videos people had put together were a hoot, Apollo's was "I'm too Sexy" which was quite hilarious and made Jamie blush. There were some nice generic ones, though the one to "Boom Shak-a-laka" by Apache Indian was far and away the best IMHO. I'd love a copy of that one. There wasn't a huge amount of programming so we spent far too much time and money in the dealer's room, but we also managed to get some Xmas shopping done for folks so that's a good thing, right?
Headed back in to see Mary McDonnell who was a very pleasant surprise. She's thrilled to be working in scifi and was absolutely joyous about attending her first convention. She's thoughtful, wise, clever, and extremely witty. I really enjoyed listening to her talk about her character and the political aspects of the show, which she's given a great deal of thought. It was delightful to know that some of the actors are as into their characters and the world they inhabit as we fans are. She's another guest that I'd really consider paying for a photo op with, she just seems so warm and friendly and excited to be a part of the whole enterprise.
We weren't getting autographs or photos with the stars so we headed out after that and I made a tremendous error in judgment over dinner (wine and spaghetti on an iffy stomach...very...bad...idea) which I spent the evening and all day Sunday paying for. Suffice to say that I never made it to the con on Sunday, rather curled up fetal in the hotel room and wondered if death wouldn't be preferable, particularly with a 6 hour car drive ahead that evening.
Suffice to say I made it back in one piece, and after I grab some groceries today I'm going to do nothing more taxing than record Dr. Who episodes and maybe do a little laundry.
