Clean Sweep
Mar. 1st, 2004 08:31 amHow could I fail to start my LJ today with a gleeful squee about the Oscars last night? Answer: I couldn't. Squee, squee, squee! Eleven nominations, eleven wins, how sweet it is! If anyone heard intermittant yelps of delight floating in the air last night during the show it was undoubtedly me every single time we won. The cats were quite annoyed.
I feel a little bad for the other films that were quite deserving of Oscars (and yeah, from what I hear Bill Murray was totally robbed), but not bad enough to wish away any of the night's awards that PJ and company received. As Billy Crystal pointed out, by the end of the evening there was no one left in New Zealand to thank.
And while all the other awards were pretty damn cool, Best Picture and Best Director were the real gems, and I'm so happy they'll now be sitting on a real life Hobbit's mantlepiece from now on. I was so glad Aelf made it back in time to see the biggies, I really needed another raving fangirl to cheer with, though I think we either frightened or vastly amused poor

Um, oh yeah some other things happened this weekend too. The performance went pretty well Saturday night, though the venue left much to be desired. The guy setting up at the beginning of the night was running late and getting snarky about it. Backstage everything was all rushed and cramped and crazed. Someone had spilled something nasty and sticky in one of the doorways that I managed to step in, while wearing my canvas ballet slippers. The floor itself was so sticky it was causing some of our group heart palpatations. And the carpet set up was once again more of a hazard than a help. I can't even tell you how often I nearly landed on my ass because of the edge of the carpet.
And of course I wouldn't have traded any of it for anything. It was so much fun, and once we started dancing everything else just faded away and it was all about experiencing and sharing our joy with the audience. I think it came across, I hope it did, and having so many friendly faces out there helped immensely.
The restaurant left much to be desired, and I don't think the food even came out until about 7 or perhaps even later. It was good once it did, but everyone was so ravenous that it was quickly gone. Lots of veggie options, though, which is always cool. And the remainder of the performers were just amazing. I never get tired of watching Sabiba dance, and Ma'Shu'qa was an absolute revelation (I bow low before her zill abilities). The last dancer whose name I cannot remember, performed a Raqs number that really blew me away. I generally don't even like that style, but she was superb and just an all around great performer.
There were also the ubiquitous hotties who were showered with tips, and the relative newbies whose courage in solo-ing was wonderful to see. Ma'Shu'qa was the perfect hostess, and one of the warmest and most delightful people I've met in the dance community. It was a really good, if exhausting time.
Woke up way late on Sunday and made the mistake of looking out into the backyard. Seeing the state of it I knew I was going to have to work on it rather than go up to SF to socialize. Believe me I would've preferred the latter, as the former was even worse than I'd thought. Nearly didn't make it through the whole thing with my push mower, but I am stubborn and knowledgeable in the ways of brute force. Then I had to take a hacksaw to the "peach" tree, which had decided to grow a new limb around the trunk and down on the ground. That thing is the bane of my existence, I swear.
It took me a few hours to mow, hack, pull weeds, and move plants around, but at least the yard looks like a yard now rather than some primordial forest. Of course I can barely move today, but I do feel accomplished and that's something. Now whether I'll make it to class tonight is another question entirely...
