The saga continues
Jun. 25th, 2003 08:06 amMy horoscope has recommended that I try to be "sensible and level headed" today, but I'm afraid it's going to be a losing battle. Why? tersa, aelfsciene, and senatorhatty, then some kitty time at T-'s I went home to water my poor dried out back lawn and feed my long suffering cat. I grabbed the mail and did my usual inspection of the front area for any kind of packages. See we used to have to play hide and seek and I'm still in that mindset.
Anyway amongst the flyers, catalogs, and junk mail (I cannot even begin to calculate how many poor trees have gone to meet their maker because some credit card company wants to offer me another card) I find a slip from the post office. Basically it says, "Oh, by the way we do in fact have that package of yours. You know, the one you've been going bugfuck over. The one we told you had already been delivered. That one. See it's been riding around on a delivery truck this whole time, which is why no one could find it yesterday and let you know that it hadn't been stolen. And even though it's pretty much identical to the one we did in fact deliver on June 18th, and was shipped in precisely the same manner, we decided not to leave this one for you. Why? Well, it just seemed like more fun to keep you waiting and watch you writhe in emotional agony over the loss of your beloved comics. Oh and one more thing, you have until Saturday to pick it up or we'll send it all the way back across the country and god help you if that should happen. Have a nice day."
I am, of course, paraphrasing here.
The temptation to punch something was exceedingly strong last night, but deep breathing exercises and playing with the cat helped alleviate some of it. Not all, mind you, but some. I even had trouble getting to sleep I was so pissed off. So today I'm going to have to leave extra early in order to make it to the post office in time to (hopefully) pick up the box at last. I will also be having words with whoever is unfortunate enough to answer the package pickup window. If anyone would like to place bets on whether or not it will actually be there for me when I arrive, please do so in the comments.
Flames, on the side of my face...burning..heaving breaths...
Ok, I'm better now.
Now a brief list of things I can be thankful for that will theoretically make me feel better:
1. Ate the rest of my tortellini for breakfast (I deserved it)
2. Scale says weight is starting to come down (in something of a drunken stagger, but I'll take what I can get)
3. Low Fat Frappaccinos
4. One of my all time favorite Frodo pics on my daily LOTR calendar
5. Dancing tonight!
6. I may get my comics after all, woo!
7.tersa loaned me the latest Harry Potter book which I intend to devour over the next few nights
8. My steam cleaner did not get stolen (yay weekend project!)
9. I still have my health
10. Mystery rashes seem to have cleared up!
I suppose, all things considered, that's not too bad.
Was intrigued by the Channel 104.9 Top 100 Alternative CDs Contest and was hoping they'd have some of the candidates up already on the site. No such luck. I'm betting that the winners list is going to resemble their usual rotation of current artists right now turning this into a mere popularity contest. However, it got me to thinking, you can choose a top 5 to enter, so what would be my top 5?
I suppose it depends in great part upon what they consider "alternative". Referring back to my clubbing days, I think it covers a pretty broad spectrum of music. So, if I had to pick 5 what would they be?
5. Hatful of Hollow- The Smiths / Violator- Depeche Mode
Bit of a tie here as both contain quintessential pieces of alternative music history. If I answered strictly from an emotional perspective it would be Violator without a doubt, but The Smiths are far too important a band to neglect to mention. And it's hard to choose which is the more significant contribution, "How Soon is Now?" or "Personal Jesus". Too hard. I think I'll just let them share the spot.
4. Disintegration- The Cure / Antichrist Superstar- Marilyn Manson
What's so important about these two works is the fact that they make a cohesive "story" if you will. They're almost operatic in a way. Not that some of the songs don't stand out well on their own, indeed pretty much all of them do, but listening to just one or two that get a lot of airplay is kind of like looking at the world through a paper towel roll. You get parts of it, but you never see the whole.
3. Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana
Took me a while to see how significant and tragically beautiful this CD really was. Back in the 90's they were far too popular and I shrugged them off because of it. My mistake. The more I listened to it the more I was struck by the sheer sad genius of Kurt Cobain.
2. Pretty Hate Machine- NIN
You might question some of my other choices, but this one has to be in everyone's top ten list. Yes in some ways one might argue that The Downward Spiral is more deserving of the position, but despite it's somewhat heavy synth component, PHM is a brilliant work. Another very cohesive message of love and betrayal, pain and fury, and some of the most dance-able music ever recorded.
1. OK Computer- Radiohead
Possibly the great CD you've never heard, "OK Computer" is, in a word, a classic. No other band in the past 20 years has even come close to creating a CD of such depth, technical skill, and beauty as the Beatles "White Album" before, but I'd put "OK Computer" right up there with it. I remember reading reviews of it before it came out and thinking that there was no way it could possibly live up to them. I was very, very mistaken. The only thing that can surpass the perfection of it is hearing them play the music live. It is complete, unadulterated genius.
