What a world....
Mar. 18th, 2003 09:18 amNormally I'd be blathering about last night's dance class (which was good, and a fantastic workout to be sure), but the world is on the brink of war and I just can't find it in me to talk about anything else.
My sisters are flying cross country this week, and "Liberty Shield" or no, I'm scared as hell for them both.
I knew that no matter what the UN said or did, no matter how many voices opposed this war that it had been decided on long ago and that it was going to happen. Did it stop me from voicing opposition or adding my body to the thousands of others marching against it? Nope. Will it stop me in the future? Hell no.
I think our country changed last night, and I'm not sure it's ever going to be the same again. I am fundamentally shaken by the direction we are being taken in, though I take some comfort in the knowledge that the current regime can only be in place for a maximum of 8 years. Perhaps at the end of that time (or sooner, gods willing), we will have a leader that values the goodwill of the international community and makes efforts to regain diplomatic ties all but shattered by our current president.
I also have to hope that the Iraqi people will not be willing to throw down their lives in a hopeless cause for a corrupt dictator. I hope that they will surrender with a minimum loss of life, and that there will be few if any civilian casualties. I hope that whoever we install as the new leader of the country will be effective, just, and honestly concerned about the welfare of his people.
I hope that the US will do what it says it will, install a stable new regime and then leave the Iraqi people alone to run their own country. I hope we will remember that Ossama Bin Laden is still at large, and that he is the enemy we set out to find when we first started this "War on Terrorism".
I hope that terrorist won't see Iraq as the new Palestine, and the US as its Israel.
And tonight, and for the next few nights, I intend to pray for all of these things, and for those poor souls who will lose their lives very shortly.
( In case this goes away, I wanted a permanent copy of Robin Cook's resignation speech, I think it's worth keeping. )
