Forgive me readers, for I have sinned. I'm about to launch into a gaming related confession so please just skip ahead if this is of no interest to you. Last night our brave (ok, mostly desperate and stupid) band of adventurers crept rather ineptly into an Evil Temple (tm) to rescue the same person from the clutches of the same group for a second time. We managed an easy victory over two sleeping enemies, and feeling flush and giddy, followed their directions to where the prisoners were being kept. Mind you, these were EVIL characters and we trusted them completely.

Like I said, we're not exactly MENSA members.

So we poke our heads into the rooms and find that rather than the prisoners we were promised, it's chock full o' Evil baddies including our arch nemesis "the Drow Bitch". At least our cleric (played by [livejournal.com profile] tersa) had enough sense to cast a silence spell, which came in incredibly handy during the following fight. See they also had a high level cleric in the next room attempting to zap us all, yay! Most of the gang valiantly leapt into the rooms and began to be pummeled by an Evil monk, the Drow Bitch and their nasty little dwarven cleric. Mind you, none of our characters had a light source amongst them.

Being a thoughtful, if cowardly, wizard, I tossed them some light and stayed the hell out of the thick of things. As the battle continued I managed to magic missile the Drow, which only pissed her off, and I got a 5 HP smackdown for it (considering I have a total of 11, that's saying something). Then the Drow got cute and cast a darkness spell.

I'd like you all to imagine for a moment just how infinite a battle between two parties can continue in absolute silence and darkness. I believe ours lasted about 3 hours.

Around ten last night we were practically out of spells and definitely out of hope, we just didn't have a chance against these guys and the DM was rather solemnly shaking his head. When our rogue went down we were just about ready to pack it in and start rerolling some new characters. And then, miraculously, the tide turned. The Drow threw her chakram and had a crit failure, it bounced out of the room and took out the Evil cleric. Our palladin managed to pummel the monk almost into submission before succumbing herself, and the monk was taken down by our halfling fighter. Then it was just us and Drow Bitch.

Now mind you we'd all been rolling like complete crap all night. We were due. Hell, we were overdue at that point.

Out of spells I returned to my trusty crossbow and took a shot at DB. Not only did it hit, but I got a crit. Yeah, I know, what are the odds? Then I rolled max damage. We were all practically giddy by that point. She had 1 HP left when the halfing took a swing and missed, she escaped.

Still with me? Ok, here's the confessional part. I have Point Blank Shot. I was within 30 feet of my target. What I had forgotten was that this particular feat not only offers +1 to hit, but +1 damage. I could've killed her if only I'd refreshed my memory on my feats before the battle started.

My weakling, cowardly mage could've taken out our archenemy with one damn shot.

After beating my head against a wall when I got home I sighed and tried to reassure myself that it's far more interesting that she stay alive. You know, a recurring enemy and all, someone we love to hate. It's not helping much, but I have to try.

*sigh*

So what do you guys think, a dozen "Hail Lythanders" and a promise to read up on my spells and feats a bit more thoroughly before next game?
