Leaner, Meaner, Greener
Apr. 29th, 2002 08:54 amOk so I snagged the subject line from my bottle of Diet Lime Green Snapple iced tea, but it does apply to my life in that I talked to my mom on Saturday and she asked for yet another green afghan. Fortunately I've got scads of green yarn kicking about my overcrowded apartment so I got about 1/4 of it done just with remnants. I'll have to actually go yarn shopping at some point this week to continue working on that one and to work on my own bedspread. The thing's big enough to swallow me whole, but I'll finally have a bedspread that covers my entire mattress, pillows, and falls all the way to the floor. Go me!
So tired this morning, the weekend was a blur of activity, trying to get everything ready for tersa's surprise birthday party all organized. I was on schedule and had everything covered until the last minute call from the French bakery I'd ordered her cake from decided they weren't going to honor their quote to me and tacked $20 onto the price. That may be the way things are done in France, but this is the good old USA, folks. So I cancelled the order and had a mild panic attack regarding what I was going to do about cake. Fortunately I took elo_sf's advice and hit Costco, picking up that membership I've been meaning to for the past year. I found just what I wanted and decided to wait until Sunday morning to pick them up so they'd be fresher. Then I was off to mallen's Call of Cthulu game. If there's one thing I've learned, when he GM's, my character is doomed. I think next time I'm playing a big, dumb goon who likes to hit things with a baseball bat. On the plus side, my character did get laid, and was the only member of the party who could say that so I guess it wasn't a total loss.
Then we went back to tersa's place for "Don't Say a Word" which was a rather pathetic film where the writer and director decided they'd see if they could cram every "thriller" cliche they could think of into one film. Now don't get me wrong, I like the genre as a whole. I have nothing against a well conceived story about bad guys doing bad things to good people. But when the bad guys are given a ridiculous advantage over the protagonist so that we can cheer him on and feel this inflated sense of relief when he finally triumphs; then all the other characters in the film are turned into babbling idiots to make him look good by comparison; then the audience is expected to ignore huge, cavernous plot holes...well, that's when I start getting snarky and yelling at the t.v. screen. "No, moron, you don't just meekly do whatever the kidnappers tell you to, by doing that you give them the power over you that they want. No, you are the one with the actual power, that's why they had to resort to kidnapping your loved one to make you do something. Use it." which was inevitably followed by, "Oh just shoot him, for god's sake!"
I hate it when fictional characters don't do what I tell them to. This may explain why I like HK movies so much, when I tell them to shoot someone they usually do.
But I'm happy to say that the surprise party on Sunday got most of the remaining bad taste from that flick out of my mouth. It went off mostly hitch-less and there seemed to be plenty of food for all. One or two lulls in conversation were pretty quickly filled and I think a good time was had by all. I hope so. Though, I think tersa's still annoyed that she didn't get a Craft Night that evening. We'll reschedule, promise.
I did feel kind of bad leaving before the end of the event, especially with so much stuff lying about the place. If it didn't get cleaned up last night, tersa, just let me know and I'll stop over after class tonight and give you a hand. There's no reason you should have to clean up after your own birthday party *G* Oh and pictures will be forthcoming, just as soon as I get a free minute or two to upload them.
Ok, tired now.
