Two farewells to begin with, one to the unbearable heatwave of last week. Get thee gone, and never return! Second to the great Katharine Hepburn who was a childhood hero of mine. If I can ever be even 1/10th as cool, level-headed and confident as that lady I will feel my life has been well spent. I feel the need for a film marathon coming on.

Friday night's performance was rather disappointing, but still fun so that's cool. I got rather surprisingly bumped into opening the show and got about halfway through my piece when the music cut out inexplicably. I smiled in what I hope wasn't too much of a "Please, somebody shoot me now" way and attempted to remain cool until the music returned some time later. It felt like years, but I suspect it was more like 30 seconds or so. Starting over I screwed the piece up in new and interesting ways, but it was a solo so nobody but me and the others in the troupe could tell. Also managed to whack my hand on the low ceiling divider when I started the airplanes, but after moving forward a step I'm told the rest looked superb. We stumbled our way through Princess of Cairo and Choukraine, and the latter turned out to be rather funny really. I just hope we didn't embarass Alyne too much. As we seemed to be the only students dancing and a lot of teachers showed up (pros kept walking in and each time we recognized a face one of us chirped, "Ok, now I'm really nervous.")

I was very thankful to have some soda to come back for after I'd done my duty and acted as moral support for the other troupe members. One of the best parts about doing a gig like this is standing "backstage" and giggling with the other dancers. Listening to everyone comment on what they'd screwed up in the various pieces made me feel a bit better about my own flubs. And Alyne seemed mostly pleased and gave us all hugs afterwards so that was cool. I got another pat on the back for my willingness to start and the music problems. I just smiled weakly and replied, "Guess it was my turn."

I should comment that both [livejournal.com profile] aelfsciene and [livejournal.com profile] eilonwey had flawless veil solos, despite the horrible dance set up and the little kids sitting on the floor right in front of them. And [livejournal.com profile] cyranocyrano was kind enough to take some pics that Aelf has assured me will be uploaded in the not too distant future.

Speaking of which, I spent most of Saturday finishing HP: The Order of the Phoenix, which left a bit of an h/c fanfic taste in my mouth but was otherwise definitely engrossing. I look forward to seeing where JK goes with the next one. Then I launched into my website update project. It concluded rather later Saturday night than intended, so I missed a housewarming party. But dammit, I needed to get it done and Saturday was my one and only time to do it. So anyway, if you're interested in seeing some new pages on my site with the best photos R- took of our MECDA hafla performance go here:

I'll try to keep the pages updated as new images become available.

Sunday started far too early given that I'd stayed up later than I should watching more Kenshin episodes. But I got a lot done before we took off for [livejournal.com profile] jakejr's place for The Wire, cookies, and mmm, yummy pasta! We made it all the way up to the latest episode in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed meeting the new characters. This season seems to be going just as strong as the last and if you get a chance to catch the show do so. Of course there are so many people in it that you may need a scorecard to sort them all out.

Ok, quick question for those who frequently buy airline tickets. Is it smarter to buy them earlier (i.e. 5+ months in advance) or to wait until closer to the time you leave? I'm going to purchase some tix for my family to come out and visit around Xmas time and I rather doubt anyone will be offering discounts for that in the coming months, but, well, I thought I'd ask.

Quick note on my way out the door--images on the new page appear to be mislinked, on Misha's and your section.
And I'm finally asking, wtf is Wire? (Aside from the band.)

Hmm, they seemed to work last night, but I shall check. And The Wire is a show on HBO that is done by the same folks who brought us the best cop show ever on primetime, "Homicide".

Nice web page! It looks great!

But please do the world a favor and take down laila8.jpg and laila9.jpg. Pretty please? No one should be forced to watch me dying of thirst.

Oh, and I thought that your solo looked great on Friday, despite the horrific music issues. We really need to get someone other than Alyne or one of the other dancers to do music next time. An announcer would also have been kind of nice.

I couldn't tell, by the way, that you hit your hand during the airplanes. They looked perfect!

The pics should work now, I should know better than to design on IE, it's far too forgiving of typos. And if you really want those pics down I can pull them, but I think they're all really nice, beautiful composition and you look lovely. Trust me the only one who knows you were about to expire from thirst during them is you and your fellow troupe members *G*

On plane tickets it depends a bit on the airline. I've had the best luck 4-6 weeks ahead of time. Closer to 6-8 for the holiday season. Too early, and the airlines tend to go with flat prices because they don't know which flights they want to attract people to. Too late (less than 21 or 14 days, depending) and they're bumping up prices for the poor planners (until the very last minute, when they drop them again to fill seats).

Buying them ridiculously early won't get you the fare promotional prices. OTOH, the discounted seats for travel around Christmas time aren't real common even if you do buy in advance.

I've had the best luck getting reasonable fares around Christmas by traveling *on Christmas day* itself. It sounds bad, but it's actually wonderful: the airports aren't busy and it's way cheaper than waiting a day or two.
