Gosh, it almost feels like my birthday, two months early yet!

Christian Coalition spiraling down the financial toilet:

In an era when conservative Christians enjoy access and influence throughout the federal government, the organization that fueled their rise has fallen on hard times.

The once-mighty Christian Coalition, founded 17 years ago by the Rev. Pat Robertson as the political fundraising and lobbying engine of the Christian right, is more than $2 million in debt, beset by creditors’ lawsuits and struggling to hold on to some of its state chapters.

In March, one of its most effective chapters, the Christian Coalition of Iowa, cut ties with the national organization and reincorporated itself as the Iowa Christian Alliance, saying it “found it impossible to continue to carry a name that in any way associated us with this national organization.”

...couple of years ago, the newly-elected governor of Alabama (Bob Riley, usually a bog-standard GOP Republican) came to the realization that the tax system in Alabama was spectacularly fucked up - and that charging timber companies almost nothing at all in property tax, while starting income tax on a family of four at an income of $4500 a year (that's forty-five hundred, not forty-five thousand), was deeply wrong. Almost un-Christian, even.

So he pushed for a big tax reform package that had to pass a state referendum. The national organization of the Christian Coalition supported it as good for the poor. The Christian Coalition of Alabama opposed it, loudly and noisily, as a tax increase.

Needless to say, it flopped.

Proof, if any were needed, that the CC is lost in the wilderness. Another thirty-nine years sounds about right...
