I wondered the same thing, so did a bunch of searching. I came up with the movie Bell, Book, and Candle (1958), as well as a number of references back to a witch hunter in 1647, and one of the witch's failiars had that name. In the movie, the familiar is, of course, a siamese cat.

So, Siamese cat of cute blonde witch? Makes an awful lot of sense, although she doesn't have the right hair...

Kim Novak is one of my all time favorite actresses and she plays the coolest witch of all time. Her kitty is her familiar and she uses it to cast her spells.
