New poll: Zero percent of Americans think national economy is improving.

A new American Research Group poll shows that “[n]o Americans say that the national economy is getting better,” while 82 percent say it is getting much worse. Only 17 percent approve of President Bush’s handling of the economy, with 78 percent disapproving. Even among Republicans, more disapprove of his economic performance than approve:

Among Republicans, 46% approve of the way Bush is handling the economy and 48% disapprove. Among Democrats, 97% disapprove of the way Bush is handling the economy and 2% approve. Among independents, 8% approve and 87% disapprove of the way Bush is handling the economy.

Somewhat heartening that people have, overall, bought themselves a clue. But how horrifying is it that 46% of Republicans approve of Bush's handling of the economy? Surely not all of them can be Wall Street fat cats or the parasitical lifeforms that attach themselves remora-like to said fat cats. Surely. So how does one explain this approval? Mental defects?

I am sticking by my assertion that many Americans think the generation of wealth is itself a virtue, and that if the economy is being run in such a way that it makes rich people even richer, then it's making those rich people even MORE virtuous. In other words, Bush is doing God's work.

Related to this is that many Americans somehow, in spite of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that they can some day be among the ultra rich if they work hard enough. To which I say "Bwahahahahahaha! Ahem. Sorry, family."

That's a mindset that puzzles me deeply. Then again I'm not all that good at self-deception. I suspect my life would be much simpler if I were.

It would be nice to believe that I'll live to see a time when the generation of wealth for its own sake becomes derided and scorned. It's one of those little dreams that keeps me going some days.

My dream is a smashing Democratic victory in November, followed by a huge crowd on the Mall in January, and when the current crew has to come out on stage, the crowd going into an ear-splitting ECW-style chant of "YOU FUCKED UP! YOU FUCKED UP!"

I don't know what it says when political analysis is well-informed through comparisons to professional wrestling.

Republicans are like religious "true believers." They don't look at things rationally. They go with their (over-sized) gut and damn the facts.
