It doesn't amaze me, especially not when things like the 1994 Rwanda genocide happen. The rights I take for granted are unattainable luxuries (and sometimes crimes punishable by death) in other parts of the world.
Our Sometimes Roommate is an international relief worker, and has recently been both in Angola and Congo-Brazaville. We were horrified enough by her Angolan stories. She says it's even worse in the Congos, where every death is blamed on witchcraft, and almost every witch is found to be someone in the extended family.
