My "Hit by a Truck" weekend
The sad thing I've discovered about life is that I've gotten to an age where I rely a great deal on momentum to keep me going (and no, not the horrible Scifi channel original film about telekinetics and a really hot "physics" professor *G*). Take a couple of weekends off and laze about, and when I have a busy weekend following them I feel like I slammed myself into a wall a few times afterwards. Yay.
Ok, enough with the bitching, allow me to summarize as much as I'm capable of doing so.
Friday night was Straw Hat and Aelf's spectacular solo debut. She was superb and got lots and lots of tips for her efforts, though she only made it around half the room due to some untimely spinning. Still the crowd loved her and was really enjoying the performance. She received many kudos and Alyne was sweet enough to leave her camera with me so I could play paparazzi with
jimweasel and
silkblade. Sadly the camera was completely zoomed out and I was forced to crouch just a couple of feet away from her (grr, Straw Hat) but we're looking at this as her close up taping whereas the others have been full body ones. Hey, I never claimed to be a camerawoman.
Poor Alyne was sick so couldn't stay for the performance, I hope she has enough sense to take tonight off if she still is ill.
Saturday I was up bright and early to get all my errands and chores done before the ever delightful
jakejr arrived. Whipped up some ok chickenless noodle soup and baked potatoes (yes, in that heat, and yes I am nuts) plus some fresh baked rosemary bread. I think I should mass produce the latter, it might give me an excuse to chop back the rosemary bush a bit before it eats more of my patio. We watched several episodes of "The Wire" (one of which reminded me again why Omar is my favorite character), then
tersa arrived with Brotherhood of the Wolf and gooey chocolatey goodness. What her brownies lacked in structural integrity they more than made up for in yumminess! Alas my PS2 said "no movie for you" so we resorted to Spiderman which, sadly, did not contain Mark DeCascos in a loincloth. I am beginning to think that that is another universal success marker for me. Add M.C. in undies or a loincloth and/or ninjas to any film or t.v. show and I'll happily watch it.
Up far too early on Sunday, but there are few jobs in this world that can be unpleasant when one is doing them in a room full of romping kittens. We had some real babies in one of the kennels, three squeaky little blue-eyed darlings whom I've dubbed "The Lords of Chaos". You would not believe the destruction those three could unleash on their living quarters. About ten seconds after I'd finished cleaning their place up it looked like a tornado had struck it. I pray for the people who adopt those three, they're going to need it.
Got everything done in record time and zoomed home to shower and change so we could run up to Oakland for Summer Caravan. I think we got there around 1:30 or so and made it no further than the first booth for some time. Oh gods her stuff was gorgeous and I was lured into buying a top and skirt that are quite exquisite.
eilonwey and
silkblade greeted us there and gushed about all the great vendors we had yet to check out. Made a pass or two around the room and noted the guy I'd gotten my moon skirt from was set up in one of the corners. His stuff was still obscenely cheap and I hoped he'd have those skirts again. Sadly, no, or perhaps it was Fate's way of saying, "You're on a budget, stick to it."
Grabbed a bite to eat then went back inside and caught up again to Aelf who was in "focused shopping mode". Enjoyed shopping vicariously through her, then took a break to watch some dancing. Troupe Nijmeh still does nothing for me, and the fact that Una decided to dance with them while it was quite clear she was only fuzzy on the choreographies didn't help. And these guys win awards? Um, ok.
Got to see all my favorites and
caredhel appeared just in time to join Aelf and I for some serious performance watching. Finally Qamar appeared in a flame costume that was more "barely" than "there". That woman has some serious cajones, no question, and damn is she good. She did this number with her drummer beau that had all our jaws dropping. The place went nuts for her, as well they should.
Then came Souhaila.
I feel that now I've seen her I need to divide my life into B.S. and A.S. ("before Souhaila" and "after Souhaila"). Good gods there just aren't words to describe that woman. Imagine if you can Xena getting up on stage in this patchwork earth toned costume, the skirt of which consisted of seperate fringy bits. She looked like some warrior goddess come to life. And then she danced. As the music kicked up she looked out at all of us and silently declared, "You are all my bitches", and we silently replied, "Ma'am, yes ma'am."
I now understand why dancers practically bow down and worship at her feet. I could see audience members forget to breathe on occasion, and I know I did once or twice myself. I don't know what I would've done if she'd launched into any of the choreographies I learned. The room went fucking bugnuts for her, and rightly so. I haven't found a woman so electrically mesmerizing since meeting Hudson years ago. Part of me wants to study with her, and the other wants to start a small cult devoted to her.
After her, her four year old daughter came out and did a couple of pieces that kicked ass as well. The crowd went even more apeshit and the kid just ate it up. I leaned over to Aelf and muttered, "Now if she does Princess of Cairo I'm going to cry." We both giggled a lot at that.
Then we did another round of shopping (mostly looking for me) to make sure we had everything we wanted. Aelf picked up the gorgeous Indian embroidered turqouise skirt she'd been desiring all day and we both bought some more tribal jewelry for ourselves then called it a day.
Then there was pizza and crashing and not nearly enough sleeping.

Now I'm sorry that we missed Souhaila. :( But we were really tired by that time and it was nice to get home and see Neil.
And I echo your sentiments about Una's troupe. It seemed to be a lot of what Alyne calls "marching band" moves.

Mmmm. Souhaila.
Lots of props and dittos from me regarding her, yeah. Amazing. :>
