Oh gosh, it's been a while since I posted and since some of you reading this don't follow me on FB let me catch you up. First on Thursday I managed to actually sprain my ankle for the first time. Doing what? Walking. Yeah. Go me. So I'm still recovering and kind of babying it a little. I ended up skipping a friend's birthday picnic because it meant walking across a park (well, limping across really) but on the upside it did give me a chance to see Thor.
I would say overall it was a nice little movie. There were several laugh out loud moments, some nice physical comedy, and of course a great Stan Lee cameo (as always). I really would've preferred to handwave a lot of the beginning stuff establishing that Asgard is really just this cool, alien place where everybody lives a really long time and runs around in oddly archaic armor using ancient looking weapons. For a minute there I was reminded of some of the earlier seasons of Stargate SG-1.
Overall the acting was fine and the writing was ok and I can't really complain about the directing either. On the other hand when you find yourself consistently rooting for the villain because he's a) more interesting than the hero, b) a lot more sympathetic than the hero, and c) OMG so much hotter than the hero (Seriously, just look at this guy, couldn't you just eat him up with a spoon?) there's probably a problem. When I buy the flick (and yeah I'll probably buy it) I expect it will become "Loki: God of Awesomeness" as I fast forward through most of the rest.
But as far as geek moments are concerned we did have some great shoutouts to the franchise. Namely when the big evil robot shows up a SHIELD guy wonders if it's one of "Stark's toys". At another point the older scientist/mentor character offhandedly mentions an "expert on gamma radiation" that disappeared after an encounter with SHIELD. Then Coleson orders an officer up on a zip line to take out Thor when he breaks in to steal his hammer back. Said officer's hand skims over a variety of guns to settle on a bow and arrows which made me gasp giddily, "Hawkeye? OMG, Hawkeye!" Apparently he'll be back for the Avengers movie, as will Loki, yay!
Worth seeing? Sure, particularly if you're a big flaming Marvel geek such as myself. Would not recommend seeing it in 3D, I honestly can't imagine it would add much to it. Also the end credit scene, for those like me who were confused by what the glowy blue box was, apparently it was the Cosmic Cube which will play a big role in the Captain America flick. I note that there are some connections between it and the Skrull which makes me absolutely delighted. Skrull, *squee*!
Um, what else? I remain utterly addicted to Breakout Kings, which has actually gotten a great deal better in the past few episodes. The last one especially opened up a huge opportunity for amazing plot and character development. This pleases me greatly, and has inspired some truly astonishingly good fic. Seriously, just wow.
Also stumbled upon a charming little Canadian series called Endgame. The premise is a pretty standard "they fight crime!" set-up along the lines of Nero Wolfe. Gorgeous, snarky and profoundly cynical Russian chess master develops agoraphobia after the murder of his fiancee and cannot leave the posh Vancouver hotel he's been staying in. Out of cash and running low on everything but rakish charm and devastating genius, he gets dragged quite unwillingly into solving mysteries. Sure said mysteries aren't too difficult to work out, and yeah quite often the plot is rather contrived and the acting leaves something to be desired. But if you're in the mood for something light, and don't mind watching a handsome blonde with blue eyes and a gorgeous Russian accent for an hour, then I'd recommend it.
