Wow...just...wow. Where the hell have they been keeping these writers? I mean were they in some dungeon and only allowed out this season to play? Had they been kidnapped and only recently ransomed and released back to Vancouver? Seriously, are you trying to tell me we could've been enjoying this level of story telling all along and yet they only got around to producing them in the final season?

Watching a lot of CSI recently (I blame you, [livejournal.com profile] windrose, and I think I'm developing a crush on Grissom so I may have some questions for you when we talk, oh and the cute little DNA guy too) and the similarities between CSI and this ep were quite delightful. The camera work, the loving shots of the Vegas strip, you name it. If they could've gotten just one character from the series to make a guest appearance I do believe I'd have lost my shit.

Aside from a slight annoyance with Joe attempting to sound all Clint Eastwood-esque, I can't think of much to complain about in this one. The Wraith storyline was a little weak, but the scene where it's putting on its human drag to Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" had both [livejournal.com profile] moonlightnrain and I howling with delight. God I know they probably won't get to keep that soundtrack for the final version, but if they could use that one and Johnny Cash's "Solitary Man" cover I'm going to be very happy.

But I am left with a big question, is this universe the "Rod Universe", for lack of a better name (i.e. the alternate universe we were introduced to in "McKay and Mrs. Miller")? I think it was certainly strongly hinted at by what this McKay was saying but if it is then a lot of what he was saying to the folks in our universe was a big fat lie. As I recall he mentioned that there was a Sheppard on his team who was in MENSA and a bit of a geek, which, if this is the same universe, clearly wasn't the case. Also he referred to himself as "Rod", whereas in this episode he clearly called himself "Rodney". And am I completely misreading things or was Radek his superior in this universe? I'm willing to admit I could be wrong but he did definitely seem to be deferring to him and Radek seemed to be in charge of the meeting.

I like what this implies about "Rod" if all of this is the case, it certainly makes him a much more interesting guy than the smirking and slick character we saw so briefly in that episode. Also was it just me or could you cut the sexual tension between John and Rodney in this one with a knife? Seriously, if this doesn't spawn it's own cottage industry of slash fic I'll be stunned stupid.

And goodness it's going to suck for the folks in our universe if that message regarding where Earth is got through to the Wraith over here.
